About the Procedure
The miraDry/miraSmooth procedure works by delivering electromagnetic energy direct to the sweat glands and hair in the under area. The energy heats up and eliminates the sweat glands. The procedure is performed in Dr. Bain’s office, takes about an hour, and patients can typically return to regular activities immediately following treatment. And, while two treatments are required for optimal results, results are noticeable immediately after treatment. Sweat glands do not regenerate, so after two treatments, you’ll be sweat – and hair – free forever.
During the Procedure
During the procedure, the patient lies in a reclining position with arms placed above the head to make the underarm area accessible for treatment. The area is precisely marked and a local anesthetic is administered with a fine needle. The miraDry/miraSmooth, a handheld device, delivers electromagnetic energy to the precise location necessary to effectively eliminate underarm sweat glands and hair. Patients will feel slight suction from the vacuum in the handpiece, although most patients experience little or no pain during the procedure.
Immediately following the miraDry/miraSmooth procedure, the underarms are cleaned to removed the markings identifying the treatment area and ice packs are applied to reduce swelling. Most patients can return to regular activities immediately, although vigorous exercise or athletic activities should be avoided for the first few days. Patients may experience mild discomfort in the underarm area, which can be treated with ice packs and over-the-counter pain medications.
Results are immediate and patients can expect to see a noticeable reduction in sweat and hair as soon as the treatment is over. For the most effective and long-lasting result, it is recommended that patients undergo a second procedure three months after the first. The second procedure is designed to eliminate any sweat glands and hair that were resistant or missed during the first treatment.
